III. THE SECOND TEMPLE CALENDAR

5. THE CREATION OF THE WORLD ERA

The Jewish, at far as their religious practices are concerned, use a quite complex lunar/solar calendar. Furthermore, a Jewish year is 3760 years older than a Julian or a Gregorian one, because they refer to an era known as "the creation of the world era" (AM) instead of that of the incarnation (AD) of the civilian calendar.

In that way the year -35 (36 BC) equals for the Hebrew 3725 AM It is a peculiar year because it is :
-  the first of a 30 years cycle in the second Temple calendar (17th cycle)
-  the first of a Metonic cycle (19 years) from the Hebraic calendar (197th cycle)
-  the first of a sabbatical cycle (7 years).

We have noticed that the preceding years, which define the point of origin of the Hebraic era, come under a number, 3724, which is nothing but arbitrary.
Indeed : 3724 = 28 x 19 x 7 , in which :
-  28 is a solar cycle, i.e. the number of Julian years after which a same date falls on the same day of the week.
-  9 is a lunar cycle, when 235 lunations fill up 19 years,
-  7 is the cycle of the sabbatical.

We can draw two conclusions from this state of things :
1-  Since the year -35 is 36 years away from year one after J.C. (for one has to count a year 0 between the year -1 and the year 1), we have a rational explanation of the 3760 years gap between the Hebraic and civil years.
2-   The value of this gap presupposes that the second Temple calendar actually existed, as our study tries and proves. The year -35 is a turning point allowing the transition from one calendar to the other.

N.B. : Of course, the second Temple calendar has been used until 70 AD and probably during the entire 1st century. This turning point is therefore a retrospective and subsequent construction, dating from the time when the new Hebraic calendar was developed.
