III. THE SECOND TEMPLE CALENDAR

2. ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF JUBILEE YEARS ?

The Jewish people specially valued the 50th year which followed "seven weeks of year"9. Indeed the Torah stipulates, in Leviticus, 25, 10 :
" And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof : it shall be a jubile unto you ; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family."

Luke the Evangelist recounts the time when Jesus was in the Nazareth Synagogue and was reading a text from Isaiah alluding to the jubilee year (Luke, 4, 18-21) :
"[...] he hath [...] sent me to preach deliverance to the captives [...], to set at liberty them that are bruised. [...] To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. [...] And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears."

As we discovered during chapter II, this happened on October, 2nd, 34, as a year declared as jubilee was about to begin : the year 35. If we now go backward in time by periods of 50 years, we shall note that 550 years before it was year - 515 (516 BC).
A date which is generally known as that of the second Temple inaugurating (Cf The Encyclopædic Dictionary of Judaism, p. 1001).

It then comes to mind that this event, which founded anew the Jewish nation in Jerusalem after the exile, could very well be the starting point of an official calendar necessary for the cult to unfold well and which would reunite the Jewish people on set dates.

It is a very likely hypothesis that this calendar is the Chaldean one which they had been using for 70 years, during and after the exile, i.e. the 30 years lunisolar cycle which everybody used during the 1st millenium BC, as we have seen in chapter I-2. Taking - 515 as the point of origin, it then ensues - after 18 cycles or 540 years - that the first year of the 19th cycle is the year 25 AD.
With this point assured, we are now able to reconstruct the calendar of the second Temple in Jesus time.
This shall be the object of the next chapter.
